Celebrating sweeping Cotswold views

Type: Cotswold Garden Design
Area: Cheltenham
The garden:
This rural bolthole boasted stunning views across the Cotswolds. However, a badly-laid patio distracted from this gorgeous vista and an adjacent paddock sat unused.

A perfectly implemented design

The brief:
The client had a wall running down the middle of the garden as extra land had been purchased which meant there were 2 smaller spaces. We wanted to make this garden feel like one garden. They wanted an outdoor space ideal for both kids and adults. With young children, there had to be space to play and house (but hide) a trampoline.

The dominant viewpoint needed to be a beautiful entertaining space complete with an eating and barbecuing spot; a fire pit area and water feature. A swimming pool was also discussed but they were not sure they would use it over the winter months.

It is a golden maxim to cultivate the garden for the nose, and the eyes will take care of themselves.

Robert Louis Stevenson
The design:
Making the best of the views was paramount. We incorporated the paddock into the garden and created a meadow surrounding the formal lawn. Here, a designated space with hammocks allowed for resting in the evening sun and gazing out at the views.

Unusual levels meant the house sat higher than the garden. So, we constructed unique upper and lower entertaining terraces.

A temporary swimming pool meant that come the cooler months, the large, flat space could double up as a sports court. A permanent hot tub however - with outdoor shower and towel hooks - gave the family somewhere to relax outside all year round.
